Water on the Moon is found on the surface of the Moon. Liquid water cannot remain on the Moon’s surface and water vapor is quickly lost into space by the Sun’s radiation. There are two potential sources of water on the Moon: water-bearing comets and other objects that impact the Moon, and in situ production. The latter is theorized to be produced in small amounts by the chemical combination of hydrogen ions (protons) in the solar wind with oxygen atoms in the Moon’s minerals (oxides, silicates, etc.), forming water or hydroxyl groups, the possible precursors to water.
Inconclusive evidence of the presence of serfree water ice has been obtained in various models that postulate the presence of bound hydrogen. Earth scientists have debated the possibility of water deposits on the Moon for many years. Now, they write in a report that they are “confident that the debate has ended after many years.” “There is water on the Moon everywhere, not just in minerals, but in fragmented form on the surface and possibly in the form of ice blocks or slabs in the depths.”
